Becky Shander has been such an inspiration to me - both as an artist and a human being. I've admired her work in so many of the Somerset magazines and was overjoyed when she emailed me one day about my blog and art. I couldn't believe it and had to pinch myself! And when my husband was going through a serious health issue, Becky would email and check in to see how he and I were doing. Then she sent me a cheer-up package of my very own which I truly cherish. She is a special person as I'm sure so many of you already know.
She recently posted a heart ........
..... she made up on the fly and it served as inspiration for a project I had been stewing about. Every year our church has a Valentine dinner - it's lots of fun (games, jokes, food, etc.) and I wanted to make something for each person to have at their place setting. Since we're talking about 50 or 60 of these items, it had to be something I could make fairly quickly and fairly inexpensively. Here's my version of Becky's heart....................
I used old hymnal music and some red tickets I already had on hand.
The arrow sticking out is actually a folded up piece of paper with a scripture about LOVE.
And finally I need to make about 50 or 60 of them. So far I've finished 40.....
Guess I better get busy making the rest since they don't make themselves.................
Thanks for the inspiration Becky!!

Lisa

My Studio
Once a year I try to clean up my studio................. ahem, I said... TRY.......... so don't expect too much, ha ha! But since this is probably the best it will look in 2010, I thought I'd take some pictures and share them with you. Sigh..... of course my goal is to try and keep my studio looking this way. But then again, if I did, it would mean I'm not using it. So scratch that last goal ........................ ;-)
Blessings, Lisa
And last but NOT least is someone who spends a lot of time in my studio with me - Maggie! She is very curious and loves to stick her head in unknown places - probably looking for a treat!

Spread Some Joy
When I became a Christian and realized what Jesus had done for me, I felt so blessed and at the same time I felt the urge to do something. I was blessed to have a wonderful husband and two fantastic kids. We live the "American dream" - nice home, cars, clothes, vacations, etc. So I started participating at church, studying the Bible, praying and wondering what God had planned for me. Then I took Discipleship I at church and it started to sink in - God had given me certain talents, the Holy Spirit gave me gifts and also the desire to use them for His glory. That's when I started thinking about my art and trying to find ways to use it for Him. I remember reading an article in which Thomas Kinkade said if his art brings people joy, then that was accomplishing God's mission (paraphrasing here). Now I'm not an artist like Thomas Kinkade - I can't draw or paint - but I love to create things. So I'm more about doing lots of 'little' things rather than 'big' things. But if it brings an ounce of joy, a smile or a warm feeling to one person, then it shines the love of Jesus, Amen!
One of the things I love to do (and have gotten some of my friends to do it, too!) is make up little tags to hand out around town. We'll leave them with our tip at a restaurant or hotel, hand them to the cashier checking us out at WalMart, bankteller, hair stylist, retail clerk and so on. Sometimes just hand one to a stranger at the mall - anywhere, anytime. I change them throughout the year - sometimes they say Thank You on the front with scripture on the back - sometimes Merry Christmas........... here are the ones I've made for Valentine's Day......
So my challenge to you is this - Think of a way you can spread a little joy, say thank you, bring a smile to someone's face today. Copy my idea if you want - that's fine with me! In a world so disconnected, so full of pain and hurt, even little gestures can make a difference. Just do it!!
Blessings,
Lisa

Cranberry bean, Speck and Sauerkraut Soup
Now don't let the title of the recipe scare you off! This soup is mmmm mmmm good! Okay, so I couldn't find cranberry beans and had to substitute navy beans instead. And I also substituted about half of the water with beef broth. And I didn't have any sage - so I ended up throwing in some oregano and basil. But everything else was the same - honest! Oh, and if you don't know what speck is, well, it's just proscuitto! Now you might think this is a German soup - you know, because of the sauerkraut and potatoes - but I actually got it out of my ITALIAN cookbook. That's right, ITALIAN. Of course it's probably northern Italy bordering on Austria. It was just the right soup for a couple that is Italian (my hubby) and German (me!)!!
1 1/2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
5 oz speck, cut into cubes or thin ribbons
1 small red onion chopped
3 tablespoons flat-leaf parsley
1 bay leaf
1 sprig fresh sage
1 cup dried cranberry beans, soaked overnight OR 1 can navy beans, drained and rinsed
6 cups water OR 3 cups water, 3 cups beef broth
1 can or 1/2 lb. sauerkraut, briefly rinsed in colander
2-3 red potatoes, peeled and cut into 1/2 inch cubes
Combine the oil, speck and onion in a large pot and cook over moderately low heat until the fat runs, the speck browns and the onion is soft, about 10 minutes, stirring frequently. Stir in the parsley, bay leaf and sage and continue stirring 1 minute more.
Add the beans, water and salt. Cover the pot and bring the water/broth to a simmer over low heat. Simmer 40 minutes or until the beans are tender. Remove the bay leaf and discard.
Stir in the sauerkraut and potatoes and continue simmering until the potatoes are tender and the soup has thickened slightly, about 20-30 minutes. Check seasoning and serve immediately.
Enjoy!
